Ice breaking efforts continue in St. Clair County

A week long battle to keep the St. Clair River from completely freezing over, causing flooding issues in southern St. Clair County is getting some help from more ice. An ice bridge has formed in lower Lake Huron, north of the Blue Water Bridges and is providing some relief. U.S. Coast Guard officials say the ice bridge near Port Huron will help prevent large ice chunks from flowing down river. U.S. Coast Guard cutters Morro Bay and Biscayne Bay, as well as the Canadian Coast Guard ship Samuel Risley continue to work the river as of Wednesday afternoon, focusing on a 24-inch ice jam near Marine City. The National Weather Service continues to have a flood warning in effect for southern St. Clair County through Sunday.
