Three departments fought a house fire in Sandusky

(SANILAC COUNTY) – A three-alarm structure fire forced an elderly Sandusky couple out into the freezing cold temperatures in the middle of night, after their home caught fire early Tuesday.

Sandusky Fire Chief Todd Hillman said his department was called to a single residential structure at 77 Mills Street just before 4 a.m.

Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy smoke and flames shooting from the back of the home.

Chief Hillman said the couple were home sleeping at the time and were able to escape the fire.

Firefighters from Sandusky, Carsonville and Elk Township used around 5,000 gallons of water as they battled frigid temperatures and flames to try and save the home, but Hillman said the home sustained extensive water and fire damage.

He was uncertain if the home would be determined a total loss and was waiting for daylight to begin an investigation by the department.

The American Red Cross is assisting the family with temporary lodging.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
