Croswell man sentenced to prison

(SANILAC COUNTY) – Despite a family member receiving a prison sentence, the mother of the man who killed his father said she wants to see her son get the mental health treatment.

During a Zoom virtual conference Wednesday, 27-year old Justin Bonin of Croswell was sentenced to 162 months to 30 years in prison for fatally stabbing his father in 2018.

In October, Bonin pleaded guilty but mentally ill to second-degree murder for the 2018 stabbing of his father, Richard Bonin.

Before his sentencing, Justin Bonin told family members he was sorry for causing them pain and for his actions and that he was not in the right state of mind when he committed the crime.

Bonin admitted to stabbing his father with the intent to kill him on July 10, 2018, according to the prosecutor’s office.

Police have said Bonin stabbed his 63-year-old father to death while he was on dialysis in their Croswell home on Hannah Avenue.

Officers arrived at the home after a woman called 911 and reported her son was stabbing her husband.

A visiting judge recommended mental health treatments for Bonin.
