Two Lapeer County men rescued

(WEST MICHIGAN) – An incident in Lake Michigan over the weekend sent two Lapeer County men to the hospital with suspected hypothermia.

According to media reports, the two men attempted to walk out onto a breakwall on the North Break Wall of the Ludington city beach when they were swept off the wall and into the waters of Lake Michigan.

Witnesses told responding deputies they saw two people on the breakwall when one appeared to have been pulled into the water.

The second man was also knocked into the icy waters, falling into crashing waves of two to four feet.

Deputies from the Mason County Sheriff Department and a DNR Officer rescued the men, using a throw rope while trying to avoid being swept into the water themselves.

The two men, a 20-year old Otter Lake man and a 21-year old man from Metamora, were taken to a local hospital for treatment.
