The following press release was issued by Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson in relation to an incident in Huron County earlier Tuesday, October 20th:

This morning at 09:33, Huron Central Dispatch received a call from a 29-year-old female resident residing at 106 W. Filion Rd. in Meade Twp. relaying that her boyfriend was suicidal and attempting to set the house on fire that they live in. She was also injured with burns to her hands and leg.

With Deputies fortunately within 10 miles of the scene and quick to respond, they arrived to find fire coming from the house and that the 35-year-old boyfriend had fled the scene on foot. More personnel from our office including the Undersheriff and myself, as well as a Conservation Officer, Kinde Fire, Bad Axe Fire and Huron Central Ambulance responded.

The female burn victim was treated at the scene and initially refused further needed hospital treatment stating she may go by private vehicle. A ground search was orchestrated and put into motion while firemen fought the fire.

Shortly after 11:30, the suspect was found wet and way underdressed for the weather about a half mile north of and a half mile west of Filion near a woods. He was taken into custody without further incident and then taken to McLaren Thumb to be medically cleared.

From there he was lodged in our jail on felony arson charges needing $100,000 cash to be released. Formal charges are expected tomorrow, which may include other charges. Firefighters began clearing the scene after 12:00.

The rental home that the two had moved into not long ago is heavily damaged, likely a total loss.

This investigation will continue. Other agencies responding to assist were the Huron County Road Commission and a St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office K9. “

We will have further up dates as they are given.
