Family escapes Custer Twp. house fire

(SANILAC COUNTY) – No one was injured in a two-alarm fire Thursday afternoonin Sanilac County.

Sandusky firefighters were called to a two-story home on Stringer Road, between Custer and Snover, around noon after receiving reports of heavy smoke coming from the house.

Sandusky Fire Chief Todd Hillman said when first fire units arrived, heavy smoke was coming from the upstairs of the Custer Township home.

Hillman said a mother and several children had escaped the fire which appeared to have started in an upstairs bedroom.

Sandusky was assisted by Deckerville fire department with firemen on scene for under two hours, using 1,000 gallons of water to extinguish the fire.

Hillman said the home sustained water and smoke damage and no injuries were reported.

Cause of the fire remains under investigation.
