TEC receives USDA loan for upgraded service

(Ubly) – Thumb Electric Cooperative of Michigan, based in Ubly, received some great news this week, learning of a large financial boost that will allow them to upgrade services to their customers.

TEC officials learned The Trump Administration announced a USDA infrastructure improvement program to the tune of $1.6 billion dollars.

The funding will assist companies in 21 states, including Michigan. Overall, the program will allow for construction of more than 9,000 miles of electric transmission.

Thumb Electric was among the Michigan companies being awarded funding, receiving over $26.5 million dollars that will be used to connect more than 250 customers and build 97 miles of service.

Included in the funding is $3.36 million in smart grid technologies.

TEC has over 12,000 customers, covering 2,100 miles in Huron, Tuscola and Sanilac counties.
