The City of Sandusky Airport is among 439 nationwide that has been awarded funding from the Federal government for improvement projects.

City Manager Dave Faber said Sandusky will use their $1.6 million dollars for rehab work on their 3,500 foot runway with plans to mill and repave the runway later this year.

The grant money will be combined with another $400,000 dollars provided by the State or entitlement money to complete the work.

Faber said bid documents will be sent out this week and due back to city hall by June 3rd.

He said city officials were asked to keep the airport open during the coronavirus pandemic and have received an additional $30,000 dollars to off-sets operating costs.

Sandusky’s funding is part of $56 million dollars awarded to Michigan airports.

The grants will help fund projects such as purchasing aircraft rescue and firefighting equipment, constructing runways and taxiways, repairing runways and taxiways and other needs.
