Another ice rescue in Huron County; stay off ice police say

Below is a press release issued by the Huron County Sheriff Department

(HURON COUNTY) – Last night shortly after 8 p.m., our office was dispatched to the Filion Road Public Access in McKinley Twp., where it was reported that an individual was out on the ice somewhere yelling for help.

With the Caseville Fire Department enroute with our air-boat, as well as several deputies heading there too, they started to arrive within 10 minutes.

They learned that a Harbor Beach man had been riding his ATV back in from fishing and broke through offshore. Other fishermen who too were on their way in heard the calls for help and were able to locate and assist him out of the water.

Deputies spoke to that individual who refused medical treatment and asked him why he would have even been out on the ice with the weather as warm as what it was.

He was adamant that the ice was still safe because he claimed there were areas where it was nearly a foot thick. The deputies tried to impress upon him that there are numerous other areas of unsafe ice that appear to be good out there, just like where he broke through.

That still seemed to have unphased him and the deputies told him that for his good and others, he needs to stay off the ice.

Arrangements were being made last night to remove his ATV.

Sheriff Kelly Hanson said, “The ice today will again continue to rapidly deteriorate. Those who are considering on heading gout, or maybe out there right now, are advised to stay on shore.”
