Port Huron murder suspect files to change plea

31-year old Joshua Bauman, through his lawyer, has asked that his guilty plea be set aside prior to his sentencing Thursday. Bauman had pleaded guilty to shooting his estranged wife and killing an off-duty police officer. Bauman’s lawyer filed an emergency motion Tuesday, saying his client did not understand the plea before making it, has a valid insanity defense and the prosecution wouldn’t argue against the motion. Bauman, of Kimball Township, is scheduled to be sentenced Thursday with a hearing to consider the emergency motion set for the same time. Bauman was arrested following a shooting in August of 2018, in Clyde Township, which killed Port Huron Police Lt. Joel Wood and injured Ashly Bauman and her neighbor, Tim Fuester. He pleaded guilty in August to first-degree murder, two counts of assault with intent to murder and first-degree home invasion, with the prosecution agreeing to drop a felony firearm charge.
