(SANILAC TOWNSHIP) – Work continues along a stretch of M-25 in Sanilac Township where erosion has threatened the shoreline of Lake Huron as well as a portion of the highway.

Sanilac County Road Commission crews have been working hard to slow the erosion, building a temporary break wall along the shore of the water until a permanent solution is installed later this year by MDOT.

The erosion had crept to with 12 feet of swallowing up a portion of the state highway.

At the Sanilac County Road Commission meeting Wednesday morning, Assistant Engineer/Manager Dale Stolicker said the project could be finished this week, aside from final landscape work that will be done in the spring.

According to county officials, the project is expected to cost around $300,000 which is one hundred thousand over what MDOT allotted the Road Commission for the work to be done.

To date, $144,000 has been paid out for material and labor.

So far on the repairs, road commission crews have used 1,000 ton of Anchor Boulders hauled in from Alpena, 100 tons of Sugar Stone from Marysville, 500 tons of MDOT heavy RipRap (large stone), 400 tons of MDOT plain RipRap (small stone) and 5,000 ton of clay.

Stolicker said the clay is being placed this week as crews rebuild the area that was washed away by powerful waves that slammed the shoreline during a heavy on-shore wind event in January.
