The Sanilac County Board of Commissioners held their annual Organizational meeting Tuesday afternoon, naming a new Board Chairman and Vice-Chairman. District 4 Commissioner Bob Conley was voted as the new Chairman while District 5 Commissioner Joel Wyatt was named the Vice-Chairman.

District 1 Commissioner Dan Dean, the senior sitting member of the Board, had served as Chairman last year. Conley made several committee appointments, some of which were challenged by Vice-Chairman Wyatt who requested to make some adjustments.

Conley told Wyatt no, and stuck with his original appointments. Wyatt also objected to how the Chairman is selected “in private” as has been done for many years, as opposed to having discussion amongst board members, prior to what he called the pre-arranged agreement.

In other Commissioner news, Emergency Management Director Todd Hillman updated the board on the situation of the property in Marion Township which has been in the news in connection to the leaking green-ooze in Oakland County.

Hillman told Commissioners the property, on Loree Road, has been walked and nothing indicates any kind of chemical contamination, at this point. Water testing was being done Tuesday to check levels of contaminants in nearby waterways.

Soil samples were also being taken, according to Hiollman, and if any issues were found EPA agents were prepared to handle any negative findings.
