Man admits to role in area bank robberies

Authorities say a Port Huron police officer testified Tuesday during a preliminary examination where a man has been charged in three bank robberies, saying the suspect confessed he stole money to pay for drugs. 54-year old Steven Welsh, 54, was charged last month with several counts, including three counts of bank robbery. Police say Welsh admitted to robbing Chemical Bank in Marysville November 13th. Earlier in the day, Welsh admitted he walked into Chemical Bank in Port Huron Township with the intention of robbing the branch, as well as the Advia Credit Union in Fort Gratiot Township. A teller in the Marysville testified he gave Welsh $1,700 dollars. Tellers from the three banks all identified the man from the robberies and attempted robberies as Welsh. His case on three counts of bank robbery was bound over to St. Clair County Circuit Court. Bond was set at $200,000 cash/surety and Welsh is facing the possibility of life in prison.
