Voters have their say in the Thumb Region

(AREA) – Voters went to the polls throughout the listening area, deciding the outcomes of school and municipal elections.

In St. Clair County, a six-year, 2.98 millage request for police protection in Yale passed by a 2 to 1 margin, with only 141 residents going to the polls.

The millage issue garnered 94 yes votes while 47 people voted no. Three council positions, along with the mayor, city clerk and treasurer’s positions were all unopposed.

Meanwhile in Fort Gratiot Township, voters approved a 2.5 mill request for police coverage with 1,3689 yes votes to 613 no votes.

In Huron County, voters decided Mayor and council seats Tuesday in Bad Axe and Caseville. In Bad Axe, the unofficial results show, Mayor Kathleen Particka retained her position as mayor, defeating former mayor Jim Hicks 232 to 134.

There were three council seats to be filled as winners were Nicholas Rochefort with 302 votes and Richard Peterson with 256. There were 8 write in ballots, and the winner of the third seat will be released after the canvas.

Elsewhere, in Caseville, Patricia Des Jardin will keep her mayor’s job with 137 votes. There were 4 candidates for 3 four-year terms on council. Clint Braun lead all voters with 133, John Tait had 130, and Darin Sprague was third with 131.

Voters in the Reese School District approved the request for a 1.5 mill renewal for five-years to create a sinking fund. The issue passed with 375 “yes” votes to 294 “no” votes.

The school district is in Tuscola County and extends into Saginaw County and Bay County. In Denmark Township, the issue passed with 243 yes votes to 212 no votes while in Saginaw County, the issue received 67 yes votes to 58 no votes in Blumfield Township, and 84 yes votes to 69 no votes in Buena Vista Township.

Voters in Vassar Towsnhip of Tuscola County went to the polls to select the township clerk. A recall petition for Clerk Micheal Clinesmith had collected enough signatures for Tuesday’s vote. Clinesmith was on the ballot again, challenged by Deborah Pounds. The unofficial results from both precincts have Deborah Pounds winning with 417 votes while Michael Clinesmith tallied 140 votes. There were no issues to be voted on in Sanilac County.
