Mother killed; daughter injured in home explosion

(SAND BEACH TOWNSHIP) – One person was killed and another injured Saturday evening in a house explosion near Harbor Beach.

In a press release, Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson says the victim, 69-year old Sally Pullen died in the fire, despite the efforts of firemen to reach her while her 50-year old daughter Elizabeth Sarnowski was blown onto the lawn, sustaining injuries in the explosion that was reported just before 8 p.m.

The incident happened in the 1400 hundred block of South Lakeshore with the mother and daughter being the only occupants in the home at the time of the blast.

According to authorities, neighbors tried to rescue the mother, but intense flames drove them back. Firemen reported the home to be fully engulfed in flames upon their arrival and deputies say the home was leveled in the blast with debris from the home blown across M-25.

The cause remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshall’s office.

Harbor Beach Fire Department received mutual aid from seven departments including Sigel, Sherman Township, Port Hope, Bad Axe, Delaware and Bingham-Ubly Fire Departments.

The fatal fire remains under investigation.
