Sanilac Road Commission busy with summer projects

The Sanilac County Road Commission approved over $100,000 dollars of gravel work during their meeting Wednesday morning. Commissioners signed paperwork for $50,000 dollars worth of gravel in Worth and Sanilac Townships each along with another $15,000 dollars in LaMotte Township.

The board also purchased a large construction trailer for bridge work throughout the county that will be used for storing equipment and tools. Work is slated to begin on a bridge on Frenchline Road, east of M-19, this week with new asphalt and I-beams being installed.

The Road Commission also continues to take advantage of good weather to complete several road projects throughout the county. Aside the local work done on gravel roads, the County billed the State of Michigan for nearly $100,000 dollars last month for reimbursable work along state highways.

The amount billed in July is more than double from one year ago, but down sharply from the $288,000 dollars billed in July of 2017. So far this year, Sanilac County has billed the Michigan Department of Transportation for over $760,000 dollars worth of work done on highways throughout the county.

Among the projects in progress is a reconstruction of Sheridan Line, the border between Elk and Speaker Townships. The road, west of M-19, will see grading, new ditching, clearing of brush and new gravel application. The majority of the cost of the project will be shared between the two townships, less the County’s share.
