Huron County Sheriff Marine Division busy over the weekend

A Warren family had to be rescued from Lake Huron Sunday afternoon, after two thunderstorms and a possible waterspout swept through the area. Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson said a department patrol boat towed the vessel, that was taking on water, back to the Grindstone Harbor in Port Austin Township around 2:30 p.m. Sheriff Hanson said the boat had become disabled and was taking on water apparently from mechanical issues.

Earlier in the weekend, on Saturday, the Sheriff Department’s Marine Division responded to Lake Twp., sometime after 8 p.m. after complainants on shore called dispatch about a personal watercraft being overloaded and too many people being towed. The machine was rated for three occupants, however five were onboard and enforcement was initiated, according to Hanson. Several other patrol related stops and contacts occurred throughout the weekend, according to police.

Sheriff Hanson said deputies have come across many children 6 years old and younger this year, with improper life jackets on, or none at all. Children 6 and younger are only allowed to wear a properly fitting type I, or type II life jacket. These types will roll a person over so they’re face up, should they end up in the water. Numerous warnings have been given so far this year, with enforcement action taking place on parents who had too big of life jackets on their children. 85 life jacket violation tickets have been written this year with the largest offenders being kayakers who account for more than 80% of tickets issued.
