Train derailment in CN International railroad tunnel

10:45 a.m. UPDATE:

About 46 cars and a locomotive derailed in the tunnel under 10th Street in Port Huron, resulting in a small spill of sulfuric acid, according to Port Huron Fire officials. The derailment occurred around 6 a.m. Friday and the cause is under investigation, 

Firefighters say there is no danger to the public and no one was hurt in the incident. 

Emergency personnel on the scene said the train will be split and intact cars moved away so the derailed cars can be addressed. It is expected to be a multi-day process to clear the tunnel. 

Port Huron Fire, Port Huron Police, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, Tri-Hospital EMS were on the scene on the U.S. side, with more agencies to arrive to assist with the situation. Canadian officials have gathered in Sarnia to help with the situation. 

 

(ST. CLAIR COUNTY) – Port Huron City Manager James Freed says his office is actively monitoring a train derailment within the international train tunnel between Port Huron and Sarnia, Ontario.

CN crews are responding to the incident that is reported to have approximately 30 cars derailed in various positions and at least one car with dangerous cargo involved. The incident happened around 6 a.m. Friday morning

City officials advise residents to avoid the area as they are working with bi-national partners at the scene.

Homeland Security, Emergency Management and regional stakeholders have been briefed on the situation according to authorities.

The Port Huron Fire Department is in command on the U.S. side of the tunnel and CN is collaborating with the Municipality of Sarnia and St. Clair County.

The cause of the derailment is under investigation. There are no fires or injuries reported at this time.
