Port Sanilac considers dissolving police department

Port Sanilac may dissolve police department

(PORT SANILAC) – Pending a final vote Tuesday evening, the Port Sanilac village council is considering the dissolving of the village’s police department and contracting for services.

At their meeting Tuesday afternoon, the Sanilac County Board of Commissioners gave the nod for the sheriff department to enter into an agreement with Port Sanilac for patrol services, at a cost of approximately $30,000 annually.

The village currently has a police department budget of around $67,000.

Under the agreement, the sheriff department would provide a deputy for four-hour blocks of time along with additional time spend for village events or holidays.

Council members have been working to find ways to save money to address other needs throughout the village.
