Sandusky City Council meets Monday evening

The Sandusky city council heard from Barb Main, General Manager for Agri-Valley Services, at their meeting Monday evening. Main gave a brief update on a new fiber optic install project that will be coming to town this year, beginning as early as next month. Currently serving some businesses in town, Main said the high-speed internet service will be available to commercial and residential accounts alike. While admitting it is a very large under-taking, Main said it is hoped to have much of the service line installed by the end of the year. When completed, Sandusky will become a broadband fiber-net community. The Village of Peck received the service last year.

In other council news, the city received a $30,000 check from their risk management company to assist with the installation of a new SCADA system. The system monitors the water and sewer plants and alerts DPW workers when there is a problem. DPW Supervisor Matt Harris said currently his department uses outdated radios and only a few work. With the new $156,000 dollar system, workers will be able to install the alert program to their smartphones. Harris said the city has budgeted funding for the service and the donation will help defray costs to the city.

Council also approved the purchase of a new police vehicle, after reviewing two bids. Police Chief Bret Lester said the department will be receiving a 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe four-wheel drive at a cost of just under $50,000 including $13,000 dollars worth of specialized equipment for police work. Ther second bid, for a 2020 Ford Explorer, came in just over $52,000 dollars.
