Area communities opt-out of marijuana businesses

Several communities throughout the area have notified the state that they’ll be opting out of allowing pot-related businesses. According to a a spokesman for the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, Brown City, and the Townships of Elmer and Minden have formally opted out in Sanilac County, while others, including Sandusky, Marlette, Croswell and Worth Township have either had discussions or recently taken action. No official action has been taken by communities in St. Clair County, although several are reviewing the matter. Michigan voters gave approval to Proposal 1, legalizing recreational use and purchase of pot for those 21 and older. The state’s board of canvassers certified the Nov. 6 election’s results last week, and the law takes effect tomorrow.
