Lawsuit filed against Greenleaf Township officials

Officials in Sanilac County’s Greenleaf Township are being sued for allegedly violating Michigan laws that require public bodies conduct business in the open during a meeting. The lawsuit was filed by a Sanilac County resident charging Township Clerk Judy Keller and the township with seven alleged violations of the Open Meetings Act and the Freedom of Information Act earlier this year. Keller was just served with the paperwork earlier this month. The township is accused of going into closed session to discuss a legal issue that should have been discussed in a public meeting. The suit says if it was a legitimate reason, the closure should have been done with a roll-call vote, rather than a voice vote as noted in the minutes of the meeting. A court date has not been set yet for the civil suit in Sanilac County. The counts include six violations of Michigan’s Open Meetings Act and one FOIA violation.
