Sandusky City Council has busy meeting Monday night

Sandusky city hall will be receiving a new telephone system, following action taken by council Monday evening. City Manager Dave Faber reported to council that he had been in discussions with several companies and recommended approving a four year agreement with ITI. The city will pay around $18,000 dollars the first year, including $11,000 dollars worth of new phones and equipment, and then pay approximately $9,000 a year the final three years. Currently, with AT&T, the city pays $30,000 dollars annually. The purchase of the new system will save Sandusky $21,000 dollars annually.

In other meeting news, the council voted to approve a modest increase in costs of doing business with Waste management. City Manager Faber said the company was requesting a 57 cent per month increase, or six dollars a year per customer, to help defray higher costs of handling recyclable waste. Faber said the city generates around 82 ton of the waste each year, or 200 pounds annually per account. The new rates will be reflected on water bills beginning the first of the year.

Following the meeting, council members were able to inspect the city’s newest piece of DPW equipment, a new Western Star dump truck that cost around $178,000. Faber said the money had been saved for several years to help make the purchase. He said in his time as city manager, Sandusky DPW has added nearly a half million dollars worth of equipment to upgrade older machines. Among the most recent purchase are the dump truck and a $40,000 dollar leaf collecting machine. The new dump truck, complete with a salt spreader and under belly plow with an additional extended side plow, is now in service.
