Three alarm fire destroys Elmer Township home

A wood-burning stove is being blamed for a three alarm house fire in Sanilac County’s Elmer Township Sunday evening that kept firemen busy for four hours. Marlette Fire Chief Dan Korte said he believes the older two-story farmhouse burned for almost two hours before being noticed around 8 pm. A family member was in the house trying to extinguish the fire, prior to the first trucks arriving, according to Chief Korte. He estimated nearly 40 firemen responded from Marlette, Brown City and Sandusky, using 12,000 gallons of water on the blaze. The home is believed to be a total loss and no injuries were reported.
