Area election results

Sanilac County:

Most of the races for commissioners, city, and school board members in Sanilac County were uncontested. Incumbent Commissioners Gary Heberling, Dan Dean, and Bob Conley, along with newcomers Joel Wyatt and Joseph O’Mara did not have opposition.

10th District Congressman Paul Mitchell was returned to office as he defeated challengers Kimberly Bizon, Haley Mikkelson, and Jeremy Peruski by a big margin.

83rd District State Representative Shane Hernandez was returned to office as he defeated Stephanie Brown 75 to 25%

Republican Dan Lauwers has won the 28th Senate Seat defeating Debbie Bourgois by a70 to 30% margin.

In Sandusky, three incumbents were returned to office–Larry Mitchell with 555 votes, Brad Harris, 533Roger Williamson 498, defeating challenger Lupe Vandercook who had 226 votes.

At Brown City, long-time treasurer Carol Walters was defeated by Tiffanie Bissett 316 to 100

Brown City school district voters re-elected Jim Seidel and Jeff Liebler to the school board, as well as two newcomers, Teresa Kohler and Michele Vilas. They defeated incumbent Gary Rutkowski.

In the Croswell-Lexington school district, board members Joe Vitale, Russ Nowiski and newcomer Kim Kerezykowski were elected, defeating challenger Felipe Macias.

In Marlette, there were three open seats on the council, but only two candidates. Sandy Cargill and Shane Hunter were elected, and a third person will have to be appointed by the council.

Voters in Bridgehampton Township passed a road millage renewal, but turned down a request for additional road millage by a wide margin. Austin Township voters renewed millages for road improvements and road gravel. Worth township voters also renewed a road millage and residents of the Peck school district renewed an operating millage.

 

Huron County:

Huron County Commissioner incumbent Republican Steve Vaughan was among the winners in Tuesday’s election and will retain his seat on the board, beating democrat Rich Swartzendruber 952 to 675. The local ballot proposals, for insect treatment in Caseville Township, the renewal of road millage and for gypsy moth suppression passed in Lake Township.

Gary Booms retained his position as the Harbor Beach mayor defeating Robert Swartz 448 to 226 while in Sebewaing, Julie Epperson won the village president’s job, beating Paul Englehardt by 10 votes. Sebewaing Council also has three new members; Nathan Schultz, Brandy Gunsell and Deniss Kundinger Sr.

In Elkton, the Headlee override on 4 village millages and the renewal of ambulance service millage were all approved.

Huron County voters said no to all three statewide ballots

 

Tuscola County:

Voters in Tuscola County went to the polls Tuesday and had a number of contested races and ballot questions to decide. Republican Dan Grimshaw was elected to be the 5th district County Commissioner in Tuscola County, defeating Thomas McTaggart II by more than 400 votes.

Dan Delamarter was voted as Cass City’s new Village President while Donald Ball, Joe Leeson and Robert Plaskowski will fill three council seats in Cass City.

Caro’s Mayor will be Joe Green with Don Hall, Robert Eschenbacher and Tisha Jones – Holubec serving on the Caro City Council, after defeating two other candidates.

In local ballot issues, Arbela Township said yes to two questions for road replair and fire equipment. Denmark Township voters turned down a road millage increase and a millage to construct and furnish a new township hall.

Tuscola voters said no to recreational marijuana, but approved two other statewide ballot proposals for redistricting changes and election law changes.

 

St. Clair County:

Among the results in St. Clair County Tuesday evening, Dan Lauwers will begin his new term as a member of the State Senate 25th District, defeating his competition by nearly 20,000 votes.

All three proposals passed in St. Clair County, with the Marijuana issue winning by 3,000 votes, re-districting won by 2,000 votes while the voting issue won by 12,000 votes.

Voters in the Capac school district gave the nod to James Crane and Marine Killingbeck, defeating challenger John Antilla while in Yale, Ron Charney, Dena French and Ruthann Reinelt all won four-year seats on the school board, defeating Hope-Zick Powwell.

In Burtchville Township, voters approved a fire millage renewal by a wide margin, winning by more than 1,100 votes and a fire mill tax increase also passed, by 600 votes.
