Train hits unoccupied vehicle

Police investigate accident involving train

(Port Huron Township) An Amtrak train, heading eastbound into Port Huron, struck a vehicle that was stuck on the tracks near the Griswold Road crossing, east of Range Road.

Deputies from the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office were called to respond to a car-train crash at about 11:30 Monday night. Witnesses advised deputies that the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle had gotten out prior to the train striking the vehicle and was last seen walking westbound on Griswold.

Deputies checking the area located the driver of the vehicle a short time later at the Speedway gas station at Range Road and I-94.

During an investigation into what occurred, it was determined that the driver, a 31 year old man from Manistee, Michigan, had driven around the track’s crossing gates and had gotten stuck on the tracks.

Shortly thereafter, the Amtrak train struck the vehicle.

Further investigation led deputies to arrest the suspect for operating while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident.

He was transported to the St. Clair County Intervention and Detention Center. He is expected to be released once sober.

A request to charge the suspect will be forwarded to the St. Clair County Prosecutor’s Office.
