Area equestrian teams win honors; advance to Regionals

(SANDUSKY) – Following competition at the Sanilac County Fairgrounds this past weekend, the Deckerville and Sandusky Equestrian teams have won their respective division championships. The teams have now earned the right to move on to Regional action in Midland later this month.

Deckerville, the lone competitor in Class A (based on number of riders on team) earned top honors in their class with 309 points. The regular season consisted of just two events, in Caro and Sandusky, with teams vying for points in a number of classes.

The Eagles have 10 members on their team and are hoping to do well enough at Regionals to advance to the State Finals. Having 120 points under their belt from the first meet on Caro, the Deckerville riders added 78 points on Saturday and 111 points Sunday.

Sandusky, with just two riders, clinched the Class D division title after a strong performance in Sandusky this past weekend. The Lady Redskin riders tallied 138 overall points to edge reserve champion USA by 10 points.

Sandusky scored 45 points in Saturday’s meet and garnered another 62 points on Sunday. Carsonville-Port Sanilac finished third with 108 points.

Two other Sanilac County teams, Cros-Lex (Class B) and Brown City (Class C) won Reserve Champion honors and will also advance to Regional competition at the Midland County Fairgrounds September 28th thru the 30th. Cros-Lex totaled 216 points, just nine points back of winner Millington while the Green Devils amassed 267 points, well back of division winner Caro.

The overall standings are as follows: Class A – Deckerville (309); Class B – Millington (225), Croswell-Lexington (216), Birch Run (215) and Kingston (140); Class C – Caro (435), Brown City (267), North Branch (128) and Vassar (16); Class D – Sandusky (138), USA (128), Carsonville-Port Sanilac (108), Mayville (34), Ubly (17), Reese (6) and Lakeville (1).
