Pilot killed in plane crash

From the St. Clair County Sheriff Department:

(Kimball Township) The pilot of a small plane is dead following a crash early this morning in Kimball Township.

Deputies from the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office were advised shortly after midnight of a plane that was overdue to St. Clair County International Airport.

After checking the immediate area of the airport property, deputies widened their search and located the plane.

The aircraft crashed next to softball fields on Yager Road, east of Wadhams Road in Kimball Township. The site of the crash was approximately ¼ mile west of the beginning of runway number 4 at the airport.

The pilot, a 51 year old man from Ottawa, Ontario, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. He was the only person aboard the plane.

The plane is a 1981 Cessna model 340 twin engine.

When located, the plane had suffered extensive damage throughout the craft.

The Federal Aviation Administration has been contacted and is enroute to the scene of the crash.

Kimball Township Fire and Rescue and Tri-Hospital EMS assisted at the scene of the crash.
