Two incumbents lose seats on Sanilac Board of Commissioners

The Sanilac County Board of Commissioners will have two new faces

 

(SANILAC COUNTY) – 35% of the registered voters in Sanilac County went to the polls yesterday. In a close race for Road commissioner, Don Rickett, Jr. defeated challenger Rick Kappel. Rickett had 3,028 votes while Kappel garnered 2,684.

In District three, current Sanmilac County Board Commissioner Bill Sarkella was defeated by Joseph O’Mara 615 to 468.

In District five, incumbent Paul Muxlow was upset by challenger Joel Wyatt. Wyatt defeated Muxlow by just 6 votes– 662 to 656.

Unless there are write-in candidates, Rickett, O’Mara, and Wyatt will be unopposed in the November General Election.

In Sanilac County all county-wide township and school millage proposals were passed. The five county-wide renewals were approved by wide margins.

Meanwhile, road improvement millages were approved in Buel, Delaware, Lamotte, Maple Valley, Minden and Wheatland Townships. Fire safety millages were renewed in Delaware, Minden, Speaker and Moore Townships.

A millage for police protection was passed in Marion Township and a cemetary millage in Washington Towsnhipalso passed.

Voters also approved operating millages in the Carsonville-Port Sanilac, Peck, Cros-Lex and Brown City school districts and the Sanilac District Library.

In St. Clair County, the race for the Republican nomination to succeed term-limited 81st District Representative Dan Lauwers was a close one as Yale school superintendent Ken Nicholl was defeated by Gary Eisen by 23 votes.

Eisen garnered 2,660 votes to edge Nicholl, who had 2,637. Finishing third was Eric Stocker with 2499 votes. There were four other candidates who each received less than 1,000 votes.

Eisen will face Democrat Joshua Rivard in the November General Election.

Voters in Tuscola County decided outcomes of proposals and candidates for the November ballot. There were a couple of ballot questions before voters countywide, which included allowing Sunday Liquor Sales and renewal of the millage for the medical care facility.

Both passed overwhelmingly. All the local township millages passed by the voters, as well as both library millages and the Caro Community Schools operating millage.

Sarah Holz-Durr defeated two challenges for the Republican nomination for Huron County Register of Deeds Tuesday. She received 3,381 votes, easily defeating Elaine Laming who currently holds the position and Alexander Khouri.

In a two way race for the Republican County Commissioner District 2 seat, Michael Meissner defeated Jeffery R. Krohn by over 100 votes while in District 6, Ron Wruble will retain his seat on the Board of Commissioners after defeating Dr. Robert Oakes.

In District 7, Mary Ellen Babcock defeated incumbent Commissioner John Nugent by 37 votes. All Huron County township ballot proposals passed as did the Pigeon District Library request and the Harbor Beach Schools operating millage
