Officer found at fault in two-vehicle accident

A Lexington police officer was critically injured

Sandusky Police Chief Brett Lester told Sanilac Broadcasting  the Lexington officer injured in a two vehicle crash last month is still hospitalized in critical condition.

Officer Daniel Jonoshie collided with another vehicle, driven by 61-year old Timothy Etter of Sandusky last month in downtown Sandusky.

According to police reports, Jonoshie had just left the Sanilac County Jail and was eastbound on Sanilac Ave at the intersection of South Elk St. when another vehicle turned in front of him.

In an attempt to avoid a head-on collision, Jonoshie swerved and collided with an electrical pole near the Elk Street Brewery. Police said the officer did not have a seat belt on at the time of the accident and was speeding, according to recording devices in the patrol car.

Lester said the officer was going 40 mph in a 30 mph zone.  Chief Lester said “speed cancels right-of-way” and in this case, the officer was speeding. The officer sustained critical injuries and remains hospitalized, according to police.

Chief Lester told us the department is making it very clear, saying, “we have a responsibility to the people to be open and transparent and that is the case with this incident. We are not hiding anything. The officer was at fault and once a recovery is made, we will deal with the legal side of this case.”

Police had originally cited Etter for several violations, but Chief Lester has since voided them, after further investigation.
