Board of Commissioners facing new method of funding retiree benefits

Sanilac County Board of Commissioners know it’s not a matter of if, but when. Administrator/Controller Tara Griffith told Commissioners Tuesday the County will be required to have their retiree healthcare 40% funded, or face ramifications from the State.

Griffith said the County currently is doing a “pay as you go” plan to cover the retiree’s costs, but will need to change that practice.

In other Commissioner news, Commissioner Bob Conley said he has learned Marlette business Groupo Antolin will be doing a major expansion, adding another 90,000 square feet onto their production facility.

The Spanish-based automotive company first started in Brown City with 45 employees and has now outgrown their Marlette facility and is beginning expansion later this year.

Commissioner Gary Heberling said plans of moving the World War II Memorial on the Courthouse Lawn continues to proceed, showing fellow commissioners renderings of the memorial’s new location near the middle of the property.

Heberling said discussions on moving the monument from it’s current location by the Gazebo first started last fall.

It is expected to cost up to $30,000 for the new monument that honors World War 11 and Vietnam Veterans.
