UPDATE: One dead in suspected Croswell homicide

Police investigate Croswell homicide

 UPDATE – JULY 11 4;30 P.M.

A 24-year-old Croswell man has been arraigned on a charge of open murder in the stabbing death of his father. The Sanilac County Prosecutor’s Office said Justin Bonin stood mute during his arraignment Wednesday afternoon. He has a probable cause hearing at 10 a.m. July 24th and a preliminary examination at 1:30 p.m. July 31st. Bond has been set at $1 million cash or surety.

Croswell Police Chief Dave Hall said the investigation is ongoing and an autopsy was conducted Wednesday morning in Lapeer County. Police responded to a residence on Hannah Avenue about 7 a.m. Tuesday to a call from a woman that her son was stabbing her husband. Officers arrested the son outside the residence without incident. Inside, they found 63-year-old Richard Lee Bonin deceased. Hall said the son was living at the home with his parents.

Croswell Police Chief Dave Hall provided additional information about the homicide in Croswell Tuesday morning. Below is his entire statement as he released on the department’s Facebook page;

On Tuesday, July 10, 2018 at 7:00 AM, Sanilac Central Dispatch was called by a female reporting that her son was stabbing her husband. This occurred on Hannah St near Sanborn Ave in the City of Croswell. Several police officers were dispatched to the scene.

The caller reported to Central Dispatch that her son, who had done the stabbing, had left the residence and had gone outside to the front of the home. Lexington Police arrived and found the man standing outside of the home. He was taken into custody without incident. Croswell Police arrived and entered the house finding a 63 year old male, RICHARD LEE BONIN, deceased.

Other units from the Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office, MSP Caro Post and Marlette Police arrived to help investigate this incident. MSP Crime Lab from Bridgeport was also called to the scene. The person of interest, a 24 year old male from Croswell, is being held in the Sanilac County Jail pending arraignment at a later date.

His name is being withheld until arraignment. The 24 year old male suspect was a resident of the Hannah St home.

Croswell Police Department was assisted by Croswell EMS, Croswell Fire/Rescue, Lexington Police, MSP Caro, Sanilac County Sheriff, MSP Crime Lab and the Sanilac County Prosecutor.

 

 

Croswell police and other law enforcement agencies are investigating an incident in Croswell early Tuesday morning. According to the police department’s Facebook page, police are on the scene of a domestic violence scene where a person was killed. A message said although the scene and surrounding areas were secure, investigators asked everyone to avoid the location of Sanborn St and Hannah St. According to police, around 7 a.m., a call was made to dispatch and a male was found deceased. Another male is being held as a person of interest and a third family member is at the scene being questioned. Police believe the victim is in his late 50’s and the person of interest is a relative, in his late 20’s or 30’s. According to investigators, the victim’s wife was at the home at the time of the incident and is the suspect’s mother. It was not immediately known if the suspect was the victim’s son or step-son. Police will be meeting with Sanilac County Prosecutor James Young later today to discuss the incident.

July 10, 5:30 p.m.:

A 25-year-old man is being questioned by police following the stabbing death of his father. Croswell Police were called to a residence on Hannah Avenue about 7 a.m. Tuesday morning to a reported stabbing in progress. A 63-year-old man who lived at the residence was found dead with his wife and son still at the scene. The son was taken into custody by police and the wife was also questioned. Michigan State Police have brought their Mobile Crime Lab trailer to the scene to assist in the investigation. Sanilac County sheriff deputies and officers from Croswell and Lexington are assisting Michigan State Police at the scene.
