(CARSONVILLE) – Michelle Campbell, a fifth grade teacher at Carsonville Port Sanilac Elementary School, was named a 2017-2018 ‘LifeChanger of the Year’ award winner at a surprise ceremony during a celebration in the school’s gymnasium Monday afternoon.

As a LifeChanger of the Year award winner, Campbell received a $3,000 cash award to be shared with her school. The award was presented to Campbell by National Life Group representative Jay Dunlap.

“I had no idea this was happening and am so thrilled, not only for myself – but for my students, staff and the community,” Campbell said. “It really goes to show that hard work and being creative in the classroom can pay off in a lot of ways. But for me, it’s all about the kids and how to keep them engaged and having fun learning.”

Campbell was selected as a LifeChanger of the Year winner out of more than 825 teachers, administrators and school district employees nominated for the award from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. She was nominated by her principal, Jennifer Richmond.

Campbell is being recognized for her use of hands-on project-based learning in her classroom..

She has served C-PS for 14 years including several as a physical education teacher and dean of students. Her track record of helping students through difficult situations made her a great nominee, according to school officials.

She has been a leader in her district in terms of administrative tasks and technology grant writing, securing multiple smart phones to enhance her classroom curriculum. She has a true knack for engaging her students and making learning fun.

Principal Jennifer Richmond said, “Michelle used hands-on, project-based learning to take students who don’t fit the typical classroom mold and transform them into thoughtful, questioning learners.  She taught her students to work in groups and how to be good group members. Ms. Campbell combatted bullying and made her classroom a safe place for all learners to take risks. She took students who had previously been sent out of other classrooms for misbehavior and turned them into highly functioning, scientifically minded students whose character made them stand out.”

“Her students’ emotional and social growth is immeasurable, but I guarantee it is off the charts!” Richmond said. “Ms. Campbell has done a tremendous job instilling positive moral and ethical standards on her students and also modeling that for them in daily life.”

Carsonville-Port Sanilac Superintendent James Stewart commented, “We all are so very proud of Michelle. She has done a fantastic job and represents our community so well. This is a well deserved award and we are fortunate to have her on staff. We are happy for her and her students. This has been a great day for C-PS.”
