The suspect in a child abuse case involving an 11-month-old girl was arraigned Friday afternoon in 73A District Court. 22-year-old Derek Paehlig of Deckerville is charged with first and second degree felony child abuse. He remains lodged in the Sanilac County Jail on a $500,000 No Contact Bond, with preliminary examination scheduled for February 20th at 1:30 p.m. Paehlig allegedly assaulted the girl while she was in his care Wednesday afternoon in Peck. She was transported to McKenzie Hospital by personal vehicle, and later flown by helicopter to a Flint area hospital for serious injuries. Officials confirmed that Paehlig was the boyfriend of the child’s mother. Facebook posts Friday afternoon indicated that the baby’s condition is improving, but officials say they have not received anything official from doctors.
