State Rep. Hernandez voices concern over custody case

The latest State governmental figure to chime in on the Sanilac County shared custody case involving a convicted rapist is 83rd District State Rep. Shane Hernandez who Friday expressed his thoughts on the controversy.

Hernandez said he was relieved to learn Judge Gregory Ross issued a stay of execution, suspending his previous ruling which would have granted a two-time convicted rapist joint custody and visitation of the child born of his sexual assault of a 12-year old.

He said, “It is quite troubling the error was able to occur in spite of such, especially in that neither parent petitioned any court for any change in custody status. Rather, this case was triggered by an internal government process related to social assistance programs.”

The State Rep. said his office will continue monitoring the case as it unfolds, and if any sections of state law need to be revisited, he will take appropriate steps to do so.
