Banners are being made for this weekend’s convoy

83rd District Representative Shane Hernandez continues his efforts to assist area farmers who are helping with the relief aid to fire ravaged southern states. Rep. Hernandez has been working with officials from Indiana, Illinois and Missouri to lift trucking permit requirements for convoys heading south with donations of hay, livestock feed and fencing needs.

A convoy of more than 35 trucks, organized by Andy Jahn of Croswell and others, is set to depart from Perry, near the I-69 and M-52 interchange, around 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon. They will cover more than 1,100 miles one way at a cost of nearly $1,200 in fuel for the round trip. Jahn said they have been given pre-paid gift cards to help cover the costs and are still accepting donations.

An organizational meeting was held at the Sanilac County fairgrounds Wednesday night, in anticipation of this weekend’s trip and Jahn said the response from area farmers has been outstanding.

More than two million acres of land has been charred from wildfires, claiming ranchers livestock, fencing and feed supplies. thousands of head of livestock was lost in the fire along with ranchers homes, barns and livelihoods. Many local businesses have been drop off points for donations this week and have joined in on the relief efforts.
