Fire Authority plans continue; could be in place in six months

(Port Sanilac) – The effort to develop a fire authority in eastern Sanilac County continues to progress, following an informal public meeting where details were explained. Port Sanilac President Ray Mach said the meeting was productive and everyone seemed to be in favor of the process moving forward. Despite being what he called a sparse crowd in attendance, Mach said he felt everyone who attended the meeting came away with a better understanding of the plan and what the goals are of the authority. The three entities involved in the proposal had some difficulty finding a fair and equitable balance for all to be involved in, but at a recent Adhoc meeting, the committee agreed on a funding formula that seemed to spur the process along.

Officials from Forester Township, Sanilac Township and the Village of Port Sanilac have been meeting to try and hammer out a deal that will maintain the level of emergency services residents have come to expect.

Mach said the next step will be for the Adhoc Committee to meet again in a few weeks to fine tune details and schedule formal public Hearings. If all goes well, the Eastern Sanilac Fire Authority could become reality within the next six months.
