(Custer Township) – Four area fire departments responded to a fully engulfed structure fire at Thumb Towing, north of Sandusky, late Saturday afternoon. Sandusky Fire Chief Todd Hillman said his department was called to the North Gates location and quickly called for assistance from Carsonville, Deckerville and Moore Township.

A 60 x 120 shop, which housed two tow trucks, an office area and maintenance equipment, was totally destroyed in the blaze. Hillman said the departments remained on the scene for over five hours and poured over 45,000 gallons of water on the blaze. Firemen were able to prevent the flames from spreading to a nearby house and garage. No one was home at the time of the fire and Hillman said no one was injured.

Cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Sanilac County Sheriff Department. Sandusky fire department was called back to the scene later Saturday evening when the fire re-kindled. Fire officials were expected to be on scene with investigators Monday to assist with searching for a possible cause of the fire.

The Germain family would like to express their appreciation to the firemen and everyone else who assisted during and after the fire. They would also like to advise residents and motorists, that despite the fire, Thumb Towing is open to serve the public 24 hours a day at their regular telephone number 810-404-1976.
