Interfaith service precedes opening of new Congress

WASHINGTON (AP) – The new Congress convenes today after a worship service on Capitol Hill.

House Speaker Paul Ryan’s office said he and his family would attend this morning’s interfaith service at St. Peter’s Catholic Church with other members of the new Congress.

The church is located about three blocks from the Capitol, where the 115th Congress will convene at noon and the House will re-elect Ryan as speaker.

The pastor of St. Peter’s is an Army veteran who left the service to become a priest and returned to serve as a military chaplain.

Ryan is Catholic and so is the chaplain of the House, Father Patrick Conroy.
