Ex-Port Huron employee pleads guilty in union embezzlement

(PORT HURON) — A former Port Huron employee who authorities say embezzled more than $60,000 from a union representing city utilities workers has entered a plea deal. 45-year-old Chad Shappee of St. Clair County’s Kimball Township pleaded guilty Monday to embezzlement of $20,000 to $50,000, punishable by up to 10 years in prison. He was originally charged with embezzling $50,000 to $100,000. Under the plea agreement, Shappee must pay $62,000 in restitution. Sentencing is scheduled for September 6. During his hearing, Shappee admitted taking money from the Utility Workers Union of America Local 532 from 2008 to 2015 when he was treasurer. Shappee was a backhoe operator for the city of Port Huron’s utilities division. He resigned following his arraignment in May.
