Michigan Sugar warns Bay City residents of possible odors

BAY CITY, Mich. (AP) – Michigan Sugar Co. is warning Bay City residents that the cleaning of ponds used to store and treat water likely will create  some foul odors. The cooperative owned by sugar beet growers says Monday that sediment and organic material are being removed from the ponds. Michigan Sugar says the cleaning process is expected to take several weeks and is aimed at reducing odors in the future. Michigan Sugar also says it’s undertaking a pilot project this fall that, if successful, will reduce future odors. The company makes Pioneer and Big Chief brand sugars. Across the region, Michigan Sugar has nearly 1,000 full-time employees and more than 1,000 seasonal workers.
