Dog kills 280 chickens at Port Austin business

(HURON COUNTY) — A dog wandered from home in Michigan’s Thumb and killed 280 chickens, more than half of them young chicks. Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson says the husky was found at the scene of the attack Friday morning at Bird Creek Farms in Port Austin on Grindstone Road. In all, 120 hens and 160 six-week old chicks were killed. The dog wandered away from its owner’s home, just blocks away from the business. The dog was taken to the Thumb Animal Shelter. It is unknown if charges will be sought or if the dog will be euthanized. The value of the loss has not been determined, but is believed to exceed several thousand dollars. The attack occurred before Bird Creek Farms holds a grand opening for The Tap Room, which will serve organic food and craft beer.
