UTICA, Mich. (AP) – Play ball! That was the cry of Congresswoman Candice Miller as a ribbon was cut and the first pitch was thrown at the first game of a new baseball league in suburban Detroit. The $15 million stadium in Utica was sold out Monday as 4,200 fans watched the Birmingham-Bloomfield Beavers play the Utica Unicorns in the United Shore Professional Baseball League. Skydivers delivered the game ball at Jimmy John’s Field, and the Utica High School marching band performed. The Unicorns won, 5-1. The league also has a team called the Eastside Diamond Hoppers. The teams are sharing the stadium and aren’t affiliated with any Major League Baseball club.
