LANSING, Mich. (AP) – Michigan State Police are planning stepped-up traffic enforcement for the Memorial Day weekend. The patrols are part of Operation CARE, which stands for Combined Accident Reduction Effort and takes place across the country. State police director Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue says in a statement that there’s a “zero-tolerance approach to unbuckled motorists” under Operation CARE and the statewide Click It or Ticket safety belt enforcement campaign. In addition to looking for safety belt and child restraint violations, troopers plan to target drunken or drugged drivers as well as reckless motorists. The holiday period starts Friday evening and runs through Monday. Last year, six fatal traffic crashes that resulted in eight deaths were reported over the Memorial Day weekend.
