Karegnondi Water Authority project nears completion

(AREA) — Construction on the Karegnondi Water Authority pipeline project is slated to be wrapped up in June, which is just weeks away. The pipeline, which stretches through Sanilac, Lapeer, and Genesee counties, will bring water from Lake Huron to several communities, including Flint. Construction started in 2013. Crews continue to bury the 66-inch-diameter pipeline on a path that starts with an intake pipeline, extending nearly two miles into Lake Huron in Sanilac County’s Worth Township. With an original estimate at $300 million, officials believe the project will come in under budget at $285 million. Flint switched from Detroit’s water system in 2014 to Flint River water in a cost-cutting move ahead of the Karegnondi project’s completion. Residents complained about the taste, smell and appearance, and children were found to have elevated blood-lead levels. Flint returned to Detroit’s system in October.
