Convoy of military vehicles to test self-driving technology

(AREA) — Two public information sessions are planned in Capac and Imlay City next Monday on testing that will be done on self-driving U.S. Army vehicles. The convoy of vehicles will travel I-69 in St. Clair and Lapeer counties in late June, testing technology that is a critical piece in the development of driverless and connected vehicles. The U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center will be joined by MDOT during the public information sessions on Monday, May 23 at 10 a.m. at the Imlay City Hall and at 1 p.m. that day at the Capac Museum. Officials say the stretch of I-69 was chosen for the project due to its relatively light traffic and proximity to the Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center’s headquarters in Warren. Dates and times of the testing convoy will not be released, but officials want residents to be aware of the presence of military vehicles on the highway and that a driver will be inside those vehicles participating in the exercise.
