$50 million sought for Blue Water Bridge plaza expansion

(PORT HURON) — The Michigan Department of Transportation is seeking about $50 million in federal grant money to fund the long-delayed expansion of the Blue Water Bridge plaza. The project requiring the demolition of more than 100 properties around the bridge connecting Port Huron, Michigan, and Sarnia, Ontario, has been stalled since 2010 due to lack of federal funding. Kelby Wallace, senior project manager for MDOT, says the grant would be a little less than a third of the $165 million cost earlier estimated for the project. The agency also plans to look for other funding sources. Port Huron Mayor Pauline Repp says the project would be a boom for the economy, bridge traffic and the city as a whole.
