Sandusky High School’s Flags of Remembrance Project Underway; Donations Being Accepted

(SANDUSKY) — Sandusky High Schools students have put a lot of time and effort into their recent “Flags of Remembrance Project,” with help from Sanilac County veterans. To date, $21,675 has been raised for new flags and poles that are on display on the Sanilac County Courthouse lawn. The program to honor county veteran’s with flags was started in 1985 through Veterans Affairs and under the direction of Emmett Morrell. 114 flags were raised through the program and over the years, became weathered. Students started doing research on the identities of the 114 distinguished veterans and learned that the master list was destroyed in a fire in the Sanilac County Veterans Affairs building in the 1990’s. As they continue to find the identities of those veterans, students have held several fundraisers and received a $500 grant. The group has raised $12,975 of the $15,000 in order to replace the 114 original flags, purchase a 16-foot trailer for storage, and establish a maintenance fund. Residents have had the opportunity to purchase a flag, flagpole, base and plaque in honor of a veteran for $100. So far, 87 flags have been purchased. Last week, the Marlette VFW Post #4837 donated $500 toward the cause, bringing their total donation to $800. Donations for the “Flags of Remembrance Project” may be directed to the project advisor, George Lasecki.
