Filing deadline for August Primary Election passes; several contested seats in Sanilac County

(SANILAC COUNTY) — Sanilac County voters will see races for Congress, the State House of Representatives, Drain Commissioner, and commissioners in districts three and five in the August 5th primary election. The filing deadline was 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 19.

In the race for the 10th District congressional seat being vacated by Candice Miller, who is retiring, the Republican candidates include State Senator Phil Pavlov, Paul Mitchell, Alan Sanborn and Tony Forlini. Frank Accavitte is the lone Democrat.

Three people are vying for the 83rd District House of Representative seat, currently held by Paul Muxlow who is term-limited. The candidates are current Sanilac County District 2 Commissioner Justin Faber of Deckerville, Matthew Muxlow of Brown City, and Shane Hernandez of Port Huron.

In the Sanilac County Commissioner races, newcomer Gary Heberling is the lone candidate for the District 2 Commissioner seat held by Justin Faber. District 3 County Commissioner John Hoffman is opposed by Daniel O’Mara of Carsonville. Meanwhile, three Republicans and one Democrat are in the running to succeed District 5 Commissioner Donnie Hunt, who is retiring. The Republicans are current State Representative Paul Muxlow, Brown City Mayor Christine Lee, and Joseph Reusser of Croswell. The lone Democrat is Richard Partlo of Yale. District 1 Commissioner Dan Dean and District 4 Commissioner James Ruby are unopposed.

Incumbent Drain Commissioner Greg Alexander is opposed by Bernie Hawk of Sandusky. Running unopposed in August is County Clerk Denise McGuire, Prosecuting Attorney James Young, Register of Deeds Michele VanNorman, Road Commissioner Ron Gerstenberger, Sheriff Garry Biniecki, Surveyor John Milletics, and Treasurer Trudy Nicol.
