Port Huron approves agreement to share cost of dredging

(PORT HURON) — Port Huron has approved an agreement with two townships to share the cost of dredging the Black River Canal. The agreement is intended for Fort Gratiot and Port Huron townships in St. Clair County to cover half the bill to clean up the Black River Canal each summer. In exchange, townships residents would get access to Lakeside Park at city residents’ rates. City Manager James Freed says the budget for dredging the canal that’s used by boats and kayaks averages about $30,000. Under the agreement approved Monday by Port Huron City Council, each township will pay 25 percent of the cost, or up to $7,500.
